Crossing the Oceans - Part Three

Part Three celebrates the famous ships that sailed from Europe to the New World in the years after the Second World War. We have stirring footage of many passenger liners together with unique film of various British cargo ships.

The film begins with an extended sequence showing life on board the Patonga, a P&O cargo vessel, on the long voyage to Sydney. We move on then to some classic Italian liners sailing under the famous colours of the Costa, Italian and Sitmar lines. The flagships of the Chandris line are next, fondly remembered by many thousands of emigrants. Many French, Dutch, German and Scandanavian liners follow - see below for full listing.

We then move to the Manchester ship canal in the late sixties - watching the activity on the water and quayside. The closing chapter is a fascinating record of three incidents involving ships of the P&O line at sea.

While we do not dwell on individual ships for the time that we were able to in Parts One and Two, nevertheless this film is fascinating viewing for all shipping enthusiasts. On the DVD, the on-screen menu allows instant navigation to individual ships as well as the main chapter headings. Each ship is identified with a caption and the flag she was sailing under when the film was taken. An informative commentary and evocative soundtrack complete the package.
