Crossing
the Oceans - Part One
Part One features ships of the P&O
company and associated lines, namely the Orient
Line, British India Line and New Zealand Shipping
Company. Most of the footage is from the post-war
period showing liners operating on routes to Australia
and the Far East.
In all 23 different ships are covered,
including Oriana, Himalaya and Canberra. A moving
introduction sets the scene and then each shipping
line is covered in turn with varied scenes of life
on board and dramatic shots of the ships at sea
and in harbour.
All of the footage was taken
by amateur cameramen on handheld cine cameras. The
scenes are are almost all in colour but in some
cases the film has degraded after years of storage.
Hence, the quality is sometimes variable but nevertheless
the film is a fascinating and unique record of how
it was, rather than how the shipping companies would
like to portray it.
