Canadian Pacific

The Canadian Pacific Line grew as the its parent Railway Company acquired smaller Canadian Lines in the early twentieth century. Transatlantic services began in 1905.

After World War Two, Canadian Pacific ships transported many migrants from Europe to new lives in North America. The Company's passenger operations were gradually curtailed in the 1960's.

Tonnage: 25,516
Passengers: 1,054
Constructed: Fairfield, Glasgow

We have film of the third Empress of Britain to bear that name. Her 42,000 ton predecessor was the largest British merchant ship to be lost in World War Two. This ship was launched in 1955 and was engaged for most of her Canadian Pacific service on the Liverpool to Montreal route.

In 1964 she was sold to the Greek Line and renamed Queen Anna Maria. She sailed on North Atlantic routes and cruised in the Mediterranean. In 1975 she became the Carnival cruise ship Carnivale and moved to the Caribbean. Subsequently known as Fiesta Marina, Olympic and Topaz, she continued cruising until 2003 when she was chartered by the Japanese Peace Boat organisation. She currently voyages around the world staffed by volunteers and peace activists.

We start in Liverpool. Passengers crowd the dockside and start to board the ship. We move on board and watch passengers enjoying the warm weather on the open decks. Icebergs are seen to starboard and every vantage point along the rail is crowded with onlookers. Finally, the ship enters the St. Lawrence river and nears the end of its voyage. We end with some more scenes of the Empress of Britain berthed in Liverpool

Empress of Canada

Operating life: 1961 -
Tonnage: 27,284
Passengers: 1,048
Constructed: Vickers-Armstrong, Newcastle
Our footage: 1mins 56secs

Slightly larger than her sister, Empress of Canada was launched in May 1960. Her transatlantic trade was already under threat from airlines so she cruised during the winter months and sailed between Montreal and Liverpool in the summer.

In 1972 she was sold to Carnival Cruise Lines and became the Mardi Gras. Sold on again in 1993 she operated as the casino ship Lucky Star out of Miami. In the late 1990's she briefly cruised out of Britain again as Apollo but returned to Greece in 2000 and was laid up. In December 2003 she was taken to India to be scrapped.

We have a long sequence that shows Empress of Canada in Gladstone dock in Liverpool. She turns and is led into the lock by two tugs. We leave her setting off down the Mersey to pick up her passengers at the landing stage.
